Speed Racer

I had no idea what to expect when I first got this.

It's one of those films that for the first fifteen minutes I was totally confused. This was partly because the story seemed to flit from one time-line to another and back again and partly because of the unbelievable visuals.

The story follows Speed Racer, a young boy whose love and life are dominated by racing cars and his brother, the legendary Rex Racer. Speed is loyal to the family business run by Mom and Pop Racer who designed and built the thundering Mach 5. When Rex is killed amidst speculation that he has been cheating, Speed vows to clear the family name.

In the meantime, he uncovers a terrible secret - that the races have been fixed by an evil conglomerate that have top drivers in their pockets to boost profits. When Speed turns down a highly lucrative offer from Royalton Industries to race for them, the company's owner vows revenge, threatening to make it so that Speed's car never crosses the finish line in another race.

Speed defies his father and enters The Crucible; a mad cross-country race that he sees as the only way to clear his family name, stop Royalton Industries and the rest of the conglomerate from race fixing. With the help of his rival Racer X and his girlfriend Trixie, Speed sets about trying to win the race of his life...

This movie is far more than it appears and has some of the best effects I think I have seen in an awfully long time. Written by the same people who brought you The Matrix, this movie delivers on all fronts, with stunning visuals, a good solid plot line, good acting and well, it's just an all-round entertaining romp.

Thoroughly recommended!
